CHALLENGE
How might we make complex climate adaptation information more accessible and actionable so local practitioners, elected officials, and community leaders can take meaningful climate action?
Traditional climate communications often overwhelm rather than engage. They’re dense, technical, and visually dated—making essential information hard to find, understand, and apply.
We identified three core problems:
• Resources lack visual clarity and intuitive organization
• Materials prioritize technical completeness over practical usefulness
• Outdated design fails to engage or build trust
ORCCA set out to solve these issues by creating clear, modern, and engaging tools that transform how communities understand and act on climate adaptation.
The Solution:
ORCCA emerges as a distinct, modern brand in the climate adaptation space, visually and functionally setting itself apart from ICLEI and other partners while maintaining professional credibility.
Distinctive brand identity that brings a fresh perspective to climate communications
Climate Communications Toolkit designed to transform how practitioners engage with their communities
Intuitive website featuring a searchable resource library, comprehensive database, and dedicated support desk
A Visual Playbook on behavioural strategies for community action
Real-World Case Studies Collection of 30 documents providing practical implementation examples
Customizable Templates and Graphics to ensure consistent, engaging communications
My Role & Impact:
As Creative Lead, I transformed a strategic need into a comprehensive climate adaptation resource by leading every aspect of the project from discovery to delivery. Beginning with deep user research and competitive analysis, I identified key opportunities to make climate communications more effective. This informed the development of ORCCA’s brand identity, digital platform, and suite of communication tools – all designed to make complex climate adaptation concepts clear and actionable.
Working independently under tight timelines, I moved from understanding user needs through competitive analysis, developing brand strategy and visual identity, designing and building the website, and creating comprehensive communication toolkits, AI imagery and resources. The project culminated in delivering both print and digital templates for ongoing use.
Brand Development & Website
Taking on the challenge of creating a distinct identity in the climate space, I developed ORCCA’s comprehensive brand and digital presence from the ground up. Working within a tight one-month timeline, I employed an efficient ‘design in-browser’ methodology using WordPress and DIVI Builder to move quickly from concept to launch. The strategic use of AI tools for content creation and imagery helped maintain momentum while ensuring inclusive representation of diverse Canadian communities.
Conducted user research to develop personas, ensuring the digital resources would effectively serve diverse stakeholders from policy-makers to local communities
Developed a modern, distinctive brand identity that sets ORCCA apart in the climate space while maintaining professional credibility
Created a design system including style guide, brand guidelines, and communication templates to ensure consistency across all touchpoints
Designed and built a clean, functional website that makes climate resources accessible to the community
Climate Communications Toolkit & Resources
After successfully launching ORCCA’s brand and website – which helped secure community buy-in and was showcased at the Livable Cities Forum – I returned to tackle a new challenge: transforming extensive climate adaptation research into engaging, practical guides. Breaking away from traditional dense, technical documents, I created a fresh, modern approach that makes climate communications accessible and even enjoyable to use.
Designed a visually dynamic 60+ page playbook that reimagines how climate resources can look and feel – using clean layouts, thoughtful typography, and strategic colour to make complex concepts clear and engaging
Developed an intuitive case study system showcasing 30 real-world examples, using consistent visual patterns to help readers quickly grasp key strategies and outcomes
Created a unified visual system with iconography that connects behavioural strategies across the playbook and case studies, allowing readers to easily cross-reference concepts and see real-world applications
“I have had the pleasure of collaborating with Jennifer on multiple ICLEI Canada projects. Her creative vision and design expertise have been invaluable, bringing professional quality to everything from document and web design to branding and front-end development. Jennifer’s flexible, responsive, and collaborative approach is refreshing. When working with her, it feels like she is truly part of the team and as invested in the success of each project as we are.
She has elevated our project deliverables in ways we could never have achieved on our own.”
Impact and Results
The result? A complete, cohesive system that transforms how communities engage with climate adaptation resources – from initial concept through to practical implementation tools. The initiative’s success and growing influence is reflected in both its expanding 11-person team and steering committee, which has grown to include representatives from 11 key organizations across Ontario.
in 2024 and the first quarter of 2025, Over 37 organizations and municipalities new organizations have used ORCCA’s resources for their efforts. In addition to the registered participants, multiple organizations and municipalities are accessing resources through the website.

Key Learnings
Leading ORCCA’s creative development reinforced that effective climate communications don’t have to follow the traditional, technical approach. By prioritizing clear visual hierarchies, intuitive navigation, and modern design principles, we proved that climate resources can be both serious and engaging. The project also highlighted the importance of creating flexible, scalable design systems – as ORCCA grew from a website to a comprehensive toolkit, having strong visual foundations allowed us to maintain consistency while adapting to new needs. Perhaps most importantly, we demonstrated that when complex information is presented in an accessible, visually appealing way, it’s more likely to be understood, shared, and put into action.
This case study highlights my expertise in: Climate communications strategy, complex resource visualization, end-to-end creative direction, and accessible information design.
