ICLEI CANADA

Equitable Climate Adaptation Communications Designed for Local Governments.

ICLEI Canada, a global network supporting sustainability and climate resilience in local governments, needed clear and accessible communications materials to help municipalities integrate equity into climate adaptation efforts. The result was a comprehensive print resource and an accompanying infographic, both produced in English and French, designed to guide local governments in addressing systemic barriers and ensuring inclusive, community-centred climate action. These materials provide municipalities with practical strategies, case studies, and actionable tools to drive equitable adaptation policies at the local level.

CHALLENGE

How can we create bold, engaging, and accessible climate adaptation documents that use impactful design to stand out from traditional government communications while still aligning with municipal standards and expectations?

Ensuring Accessibility & Compliance: The document needed to meet government accessibility standards, ensuring readability for diverse audiences, including those using assistive technologies.

Bilingual Communication: Every element had to be designed for seamless English and French integration, maintaining clarity and visual cohesion across both languages.

Standing Out While Staying Credible: The design had to be bold and engaging to break away from traditional government reports while still feeling authoritative and aligned with municipal expectations.

Balancing Information Density with Visual Impact: The content was complex, requiring a layout that made key insights clear, digestible, and easy to navigate without overwhelming the reader.

The Solution: Impactful Design, Accessibility Compliance, and Bold Illustrations

I developed a visually bold, highly accessible, and bilingual set of communications materials that break away from traditional government documents while maintaining municipal credibility. To enhance engagement and clarity, I incorporated striking, high-impact illustrations that make complex climate adaptation concepts more digestible.

Rather than creating artwork from scratch, I sourced high-quality stock illustrations and customized them to fit the document’s specific needs. This approach ensured visual consistency, saved time and resources, and allowed for greater flexibility while maintaining a polished and professional aesthetic. Every purchased illustration was modified to align with the overall design, ensuring a cohesive and unified look across the materials.

Impact & Results

The final materials successfully delivered a bold, engaging, and accessible resource that stands out from traditional government documents while remaining credible and practical for municipal use. By balancing visual impact with accessibility and bilingual requirements, the project ensures that local governments have a clear, easy-to-use tool for integrating equity into climate adaptation planning. The strategic use of customized stock illustrations provided a high-quality, cohesive look while maximizing resources, making this a cost-effective yet visually compelling solution.
